Therefore, this paper will analyse Sexing the Cherry as a postmodern reconfiguration and rewriting of history and reality while pointing out the techniques employed in order to shatter the normative definitions of gender, identity, history and time. I believe Winterson’s deconstruction of heteronormative gender roles, historical facts and traditional narrative structure are all interconnected in Sexing the Cherry as they all serve for the purpose of reconfiguring generally held notions about such concepts. Moreover, as the novel deconstructs what we perceive as reality, the novel defies the traditional norms of identity, gender and narrative structure through its multiple narrators. Regardless of such physical temporal contexts, however, there are multiple times and spaces mentioned in the novel as the characters defy the notions of time and location by playing with ideas such as reality and history. Set both in the 17th century London and the novel’s present time, Jeanette Winterson’s Sexing the Cherry (1989) centres on the metaphysical journeys of Jordan and his grotesque, gigantic mother, the Dog Woman.
